A reflection of Children’s Rights in the 21st Century

This year, on 20 November 2019, we are celebrating the 30 year anniversary of children’s rights!

Some might believe that with signing and agreeing to the United Nations Convention on Children’s Rights in 1989, we were done. Having the Convention meant that we do not need to fight for them anymore.

Unluckily, they are wrong.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has helped to improve children's lives in many areas already. But still, every day, children’s rights around the world are violated by institutions and governments. Additional to the unequal living conditions and struggles of children in many countries, global challenges such as climate change and urbanisation, persistent conflicts, flight and migration shape the growth and impact lives of today's young generation. It is crucial to be aware of children’s issues and to improve the living conditions of all kids.

After the first 30 years, it is time to strengthen our efforts and to leave no child behind.

  • - We need to continue working together with kids and young people for the implementation and against the violation of children’s rights.
  • - We need to educate kids and young people about their rights and empower them to stand up for and claim their rights. -
  • - We need to advocate with like-minded organisations for the full implementation and make governments act towards them.
  • - We need to create awareness of children’s rights violations and of what needs to be done to ensure them.

Therefore, in the 30 days leading up to the 30 years anniversary of the UNCRC, IFM-SEI as a global educational kids and youth movement will celebrate children’s rights and at the same time put the focus on what still needs to be done.

Starting on 22 October 2019, we will share 14 of the rights enshrined in the UNCRC on our social media channels. Every three days, a new set of rights will be explained, put into our context and reflected on.

Please support us, share our campaign, be aware of it. Continue the fight from yesterday today and tomorrow. Continue until all kids have got their rights.

You can download our growing database of illustrations and social media shareables here and edit them into your local language. Please tag our social media channels, so we know how far our message spreads.

We also revised our UNCRC Anniversary Pack. You can find it here. If you run a birthday party for the UNCRC, let us know. We would love to celebrate with you and tell the world!

IFM-SEI will be here to fight violations, create awareness and empower children and young people to raise their voices and be aware of their rights. Not only for kids but with them. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, that is what we promise.
