In their many years of struggle for freedom, independence and sovereignty the Kurdish people have been used as pawns by European and the United States governments. The ‘People’s Protection Units’- the primary body of the Syrian Democratic Forces’- is a primarily Kurdish militia that was armed to fight ISIS in the region, alongside the Euro-American states who waged the global War on Terror. The United States withdrawing their military from the region, upon defeating ISIS with the help of Kurdish forces, and the Turkish invasion in the region, are a grave injustice. After being abandoned by the Syrian regime for fighting alongside the Euro-American forces, where is now the protection the Kurds are due, after thousands have sacrificed their lives in this war?  Where is the protection that particularly the children and young people in the region deserve?

Children and young people will be disproportionately affected by the Turkish military offensive, with the Al-Hawl refugee camp - which is home to 74,000 children and is the largest camp for women and children in the Middle East region - being located outside of Turkey’s proposed ‘Safe Zone’. In a recently published statistic, Save the Children reports that 9,000 children living in the area are particularly vulnerable. The Turkish air strikes will be devastating for them, and further strip children and young people in the region of their rights to protection, health care, education, freedom of movement and many more rights enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As an international child and youth-led movement fighting for the rights of all children, IFM-SEI is extremely worried about the severe violation of children’s rights in this fragile region. We call upon the international community to act in order to ensure peace and safety for the affected children and young people. Just a few weeks before the 30^th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on Children’s Rights, governments must fulfil their responsibility to protect the rights of all children, including in conflict situations and no matter their origin!

En sus muchos años de lucha por la libertad, la independencia y la soberanía, el pueblo kurdo ha sido utilizado como peón por los gobiernos de Europa y Estados Unidos. Las "Unidades de Protección del Pueblo", el principal cuerpo de las Fuerzas Democráticas Sirias, es una milicia principalmente kurda que estaba armada para luchar contra el ISIS en la región, junto con los estados euroamericanos que libraron la Guerra Global contra el Terror.  Estados Unidos retirando a sus militares de la región, al derrotar a ISIS con la ayuda de las fuerzas kurdas, y la invasión turca en la región, son una grave injusticia. Después de ser abandonado por el régimen sirio por luchar junto a las fuerzas euroamericanas, ¿dónde está ahora la protección que los kurdos y kurdas deben recibir, después de que miles de personas hayan sacrificado sus vidas en esta guerra? ¿Dónde está la protección que merecen especialmente los niños y niñas y los y las jóvenes de la región?

Los niños y niñas y los y las  jóvenes se verán desproporcionadamente afectadas por la ofensiva militar turca, con el campo de refugiadas de Al-Hawl, que alberga a 74,000 menores y es el campo más grande para mujeres y menores en la región del Medio Oriente, ubicado fuera de la propuesta de Turquía '  Zona segura'. En una estadística publicada recientemente, Save the Children informa que 9,000 niños y niñas que viven en el área son particularmente vulnerables. Los ataques aéreos turcos serán devastadores para ellos y ellas y despojarán aún más a los niños y las niñas y jóvenes de la región de sus derechos a la protección, la atención médica, la educación, la libertad de movimiento y muchos más derechos consagrados en la Convención sobre los Derechos de la Infancia de la ONU.

Como movimiento internacional dirigido por niños y niñas y jóvenes que lucha por los derechos de todos los niños y todas las niñas, IFM-SEI está extremadamente preocupado por la grave violación de los derechos de la infancia en esta frágil región. Hacemos un llamado a la comunidad internacional a actuar para garantizar la paz y la seguridad de los niños y las niñas y jóvenes afectadas. ¡Sólo unas pocas semanas antes del 30 aniversario de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de la Infancia, los gobiernos deben cumplir con su responsabilidad de proteger los derechos de todos los niños y todas las niñas, incluso en situaciones de conflicto y sin importar su origen!
