This day was established by the UN and has been celebrated on 15 May since 1993 and this year’s theme is “Families and Urbanization”.

On International Family Day, IFM-SEI would like to address challenges that families are facing in regards to urban policies. IFM-SEI believes that family friendly and sustainable urban policies are paramount in 2022. We must create a future that welcomes families and create communities that can sustain a plentiful life for children and adults alike.

Urbanization is one of the most important themes shaping our current global society, impacting the life and wellbeing of families and children worldwide. Urbanization with a focus on sustainability is important for the following Sustainable Development Goals of the UN: (SDGs) and targets, such as SDG1 (Poverty eradication) SDG 3, (Good health and well-being); SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable), SDG10 (Reduce inequality within and among countries).

How can we ensure a future that is sustainable and welcoming to all families?

Together, we can ask for affordable and safe housing for all families across the world, particularly those moving towards urban areas. We can demand sustainable spaces for green initiatives that promote community wide participation and sustainable living. We can tackle intergenerational issues through youth work and active participation.

IFM-SEI encourages families to be vocal in their needs.

IFM-SEI demands decision makers to make responsive policies to tackle the effects of urbanization with a focus on creating an inclusive world for families.
